If New York is the city that never sleeps, LA is the city that always glows. Unfortunately, if like me, you spend your day cooped up in an office or working from a coffee shop, chances are that you’re probably missing out on all that California sunshine. And while “winter” only seemed to last about a week, that dull, vitamin-D deficient skin is definitely staying put.
As the summer months approach, I’m mentally preparing myself for the vision of thousands of perfectly tanned bodies frolicking around the beach. This vision becomes even harder to digest when you’re stuck huddled under an umbrella, slathering SPF 50+ on your overly sensitive,ready-to-burn skin. While I embraced my pale skin during those long Midwest winters in college and my time abroad in the perpetually-cloudy London, this year I’d like to not be a complete ghost and rock a little bit of a tan to fit in with the LA crowd. Nothing extreme, just a tasteful glow. Which is why I’m finally giving in and giving a self-tanner a try.
My experience with tanning in the past has been mostly negative. I’ve never believed in tanning beds— nothing about letting your body fry itself in an enclosed chamber sounds healthy to me. And my burn-prone skin just doesn’t allow me to sit in the sun for hours baking away, even beneath layers and layers of sunscreen. I’ve tried a few self-tanners in the past, but mostly with streaky results.
I’m excited that I’ve been trying out this Jergens® Natural Glow® Daily Moisturizer. The gradual, subtle effects are what I’m all about. LA is no longer about that overly-tanned Beach Bunny look; now it loves that flawless, natural, lit-from-within glow that can only be achieved by ingesting organic kale juices (and that has maybe received a little help from bronzers and self-tanners).
Though the effects are gradual and subtle (this moisturizer is ideal for everyday use, as well as for special occasions), I was pleasantly surprised to find that a day after the first application on my arms and legs, I could already see that gray, dull hue dissipating and turning back into a normal, warm-blooded human skin tone. My pale pink tops and white jean shorts are no longer washing me out, but now look fresh as Spring. I love that after a lifetime lived in LA, I’m finally getting that Cali-girl look (without the accompanying sunburn); and the soothing moisturizers, antioxidants, and vitamin E remind me that achieving a covetable summer glow can be healthy and safe. As my winter skin is now almost summer-ready, I’m feeling confident enough to frolic on the beach along with all of my other Angelenos.
