Ahh new openings. They happen constantly and are so hard to keep up with, that the very definition of a "new opening" has for many come to mean "open for no longer than a week." But not to me! Below are 3 new(ish) openings worth noting, that will satisfy your various cravings in various corners of the city.Read More
Ok...not really. As most of you know, I'm actually thrilled to be welcoming cooler temps to the city of Angels! Time to retire my shorts and sandals and move on to long-sleeve button downs, scarves, blazers, and booties. Hooray! But in the meantime, I'm loving the high-waisted jeans and semi-tucked button down combo, which to me is the height of transitional, effortless cool. I threw on this beautiful CJW scarf for a pop of pink, which matches my pink mirrored sunglasses. I'm also loving natural leathers for Fall, like this leather crossbody from Saddleback Leather, which is the perfect everyday bag that goes with everything. And of course, I had to accessorize with an iced latte from Alfred coffee...because how else could I start my morning?Read More
You can find almost every possible cuisine in existence somewhere in LA. From Persian to Ethiopian to Mexican and everything in between, the diverse food culture is one of the many characteristics that make this city great. But some cuisines will always reign supreme, ensuring a certain level of success for restaurants that other cuisines don't. And one of those cuisines is Italian-- the ubiquitous and often vague "Italian" moniker is often applied to restaurants around the globe to signify approachable Western cuisine (something we noticed when traveling in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Seoul). However, successful Italian spots here have evolved past the generic spaghetti and red sauce offerings to create a formula for popularity across the city. That formula usually includes a modern and contemporary space, fresh takes on classic dishes, small plates, and modern pizza offerings. None of this is a bad thing; in fact, some of LA's best new restaurants fit into this category, and are excellent go-to neighborhood joints for a laid-back yet delicious meal.
One of these new contemporary-Italian spots, Cosa Buona, has become a must-visit corner pizza joint in Echo Park since opening in May. But interestingly enough, they're bringing their casual Italian fare and celebrated pizza menu to lunch, which seems surprisingly novel, especially when mixed in with dishes like tuna sandwiches and chicken wings. We popped in on for a low-key Monday afternoon meal, and really enjoyed the whole experience.Read More
Florals? For Fall? Yes, groundbreaking! Ok...maybe not "groundbreaking," but I do sometimes feel that a late-summer/early-Fall floral is an overlooked pattern. While colorful pastels may still reign supreme this time of year, I prefer to opt for a moodier floral pattern to inject a bit of sophistication into the feminine style. I'm also loving the style of this floral dress from Sanctuary clothing-- the easy wrap silhouette is one of the few maxi dresses I like, but feels so effortlessly chic. Perfect for everyday, but swap in a pair of heels and it's transformed for night.Read More
What was once solely the center of cheesy tourist traps and a few iconic landmarks, Hollywood has been undergoing a major make-over in the last few years. With an influx of cool coffee shops, restaurants, rooftop bars, and modern office spaces, the area has morphed into a central hub of the city's new culture. And now that Hamilton is playing at the Pantages for the next few months (we're seeing it Sunday! Eek!), the neighborhood will be busier than ever. Another new feature of Hollywood? The new, cool hotel openings! Considering the amount of tourists traipsing around Hollywood Blvd., I was always surprised by the lack of hotels. Sure, there are the few old Hollywood icons like The Roosevelt, or the more touristy mainstays like The W Hotel, but in terms of modern, boutique choices, those are just beginning to pop up. Hotels like The Dream, and now The Kimpton Everly, are proving that upscale, hip, and modern are not out of place amongst the neighborhood.
The new Kimpton Everly in particular is a breath of fresh air, with bright open spaces, designer touches, a laid-back feel, and some rustic details. It stands apart from its neon, Vegas-inspired neighbors, with a cool coffee bar perfect for getting some work done, and a rooftop pool with such incredible views, it's bound to become a hotspot. But one of the best features is the hotel's all-day eatery, Jane Q. The casual spot offers all-day counter service with farmer's market ingredients, LaMill coffee, and light cocktails. But despite the low-key feel, we were pleasantly surprised by upscale, fresh, and creative twists on everyday bites.Read More
