We know. You've had a tough week. You deserve a large glass of wine, a Netflix marathon, and the fuzziest slippers known to man. But while you give your mind and soul a little R&R, don't forget about your skin! Dryness, breakouts, inflammation...your skin shows stress in all sorts of not-so-fun ways. So next time you settle into your Gilmore Girls marathon, we suggest lighting a candle (Diptyque's Baies is currently our fave) and slathering yourself in all sorts of masks, balms, and creams.
1. Start off with a deep-cleaning mask: After removing the last traces of your make-up (we prefer using a cleansing water + the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser), slather on a good ol' clay/charcoal/mud mask to suck out all that crap from your pores. A crowd favorite is the Origins Clear Improvement Charcoal Mask, which claims to clear toxins, dirt, oil, and debris from under your skin. However, it can be a bit harsh, so we recommend testing it out before fully committing. We recently tried the African Botanics Marula Mineral Cleansing Mask, which we prefer because its gentle and effective.
2. Exfoliate: After all that gunk is gone, get rid of those dead cells to reveal the glowing skin beneath. An exfoliating mask can feature physical exfoliation (rice beads, gritty bits meant to buff off that dead skin), chemical exfoliation (AHA's, BHA's, or fruit acids that work deep within the skin), or both. When it comes to exfoliating, you should find something that isn't too harsh, and don't over exfoliate for fear of irritating your skin. And for goodness sakes...stay away from Apricot Kernels-- they can cause damage and inflammation. Your skin is sensitive, so treat it with respect! With AHA's, glycolic acid, and rice beads, Nude's Miracle Mask is an effective treatment that clarifies and reveals a more radiant complexion. If you need something with more of a kick, Ren's Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask is another great option that has some potent exfoliating action.
3. Spot Treat: After a few clarifying and exfoliating masks, a little sulphur/drying mask makes a great spot treatment. Just dab it on your breakouts, leave for a few minutes, and rinse. We prefer Peter Thomas Roth's Therapeutic Sulfur Mask or Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay to help heal those pesky spots.
4. Nourish: Now its time to give your skin some real love! The cardinal sin of skincare is forgetting to moisturize, so giving your skin a boost of hydration and radiance with a moisturizing mask, such as GlamGlow's Thirsty Mud Treatment, makes up for all those lazy nights. A nourishing serum/oil is another way to fight inflammation, moisturize, and balance the skin; our current loves are Sunday Riley's Juno Serum and Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate. Seal it all in with a simple, yet effective moisturizer, like Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream. And don't neglect your lips and hands! Nuxe's Reve de Miel Lip Balm and Kiehl's Ultimate Strength Hand Salve will have you waking up the next morning with glowing, happy skin!
