While there are a plethora of fabulous brunch options all over this city, there seems to be a trend towards those of the beautiful and precious variety. Avocado toast served on marble table tops make for the perfect Instagram photo, but sometimes, you just want a satisfyingly giant plate of steaming hot, rich food full of salt, meat, and carbs. So we've rounded up some of those old school places that will get you full, sans perfectly-staged Instagram post.
1. Snug Harbor, Santa Monica
A tiny hole-in-the-wall on my favorite stretch of Wilshire in Santa Monica, Snug Harbor is, indeed, snug. An old-school diner feel with a small, yet lovely patio in the back, Snug Harbor offers up traditional breakfast favorites from omelettes, to biscuits and gravy, to steak and eggs. Pro-tip: try Captain’s Wafflewich with ham, scrambled eggs & cheddar cheese tucked between two waffles & topped with maple syrup served with Suzy Q potatoes. It's pretty much everything you could want for breakfast in one, satisfying bite.
2. Cici's Cafe, Tarzana
A staple for valley dwellers, Cici's cafe is the perpetually-packed cafe with a menu that offers pretty much any breakfast craving under the sun. From pancakes and waffles, to omelets, scrambles, french toasts, benedicts, hash, breakfast burritos, and more, it's impossible to leave hungry. Pro-tip: Go in a small group and grab a first-come, first-serve seat at the bar. Order the Trick or Treat pancakes: Golden pumpkin pancakes topped with pumpkim marmalade and whipped cream. Yuuumm.
3. Bru's Wiffle, Santa Monica
Pretty much across the street from Snug Habor, Bru's Wiffle is another joint with a perpetual line out the door. Serving up all different kinds of waffles, as well as chicken and waffles, it's bound to be your new guilty pleasure.
4. Jinky's Cafe, Multiple Locations
Jinky's is an LA staple-- with 5 locations around the city, you're bound to eat here eventually. And you won't be disappointed. With chilaquiles, benedicts, crepes, pancakes, and pretty much everything else under the sun, Jinky's does some great modern takes on the classics.
5. Blu Jam Cafe, Multiple Locations
Another place virtually taking over the city, Blu Jam now has locations in Sherman Oaks and Woodland Hills in addition to their original in Hollywood. It's also opening in Toyko! Though it has plenty of healthy options, it's hard to pass up options like "Steak Hash" and "Brunch Carbonara," which is arborio rice with crispy smoked bacon, green peas, parsley and parmesan, topped with two poached eggs and herb pistou. Come hungry, you won't regret it.
