We've previously discussed our frequent frustration with going out in LA; this frustration certainly doesn't stem from a lack of fantastic cocktail spots in the city, but instead from simply not knowing what to expect from these bars. I can't even tell you how many times we've committed to a bar and spent the money to uber there only to find out that it wasn't letting anyone in because there was a private party, or it was reservations-only that night, or the line was an hour long. And then trying to plan a night out for someone's birthday and inviting 50 friends? Forget it. Even when you call the bars and ask them how this works, the answers are always mixed. Your friends will have to wait in line, or you have to reserve a table with a $1,000 minimum and bottle service (and even when you do that, you might only be able to guarantee entrance for 8 people). I've actually spent hours fruitlessly scouring Yelp and various bars' websites for clearer policies, but these policies manage to remain one big, well-kept secret. Thankfully, we now have a dedicated app that's doing all the work for us. Meet Roo, your new going-out Knight in Shining Armor. *swoon*
Conceived by LA natives frustrated with the lack of real-time information on which bars are hot which night, and which bars are a waste of time, Roo lets you rate your bar experience overall on a scale of "Awesome," "Fun," "Meh," and "Lame." Even better? You can add a "Roo-port" to these basic ratings, which provides more detail on everything from how busy the bar is, to the waiting time to get in, the music, drinks, and overall vibes. And of course, the app allows users to throw in their own comments and photos as well. Roo then collects this information and spits out real-time ratings of each venue, allowing users to browse bars all over the city to see which ones are hot that night. And in case you want to know where all your buds are, you can follow your friends and check out where they are and all the places they've been!
Still not satisfied with this amount of real time information? Roo lets you check out each venue for their virtual histories. So if they haven't been rated yet for tonight, you can find out what people said about them last weekend.
Now that you've obviously downloaded the app and are ready to go forth and have the best weekend ever, you can decide what kind of night you're looking for and carefully select your venues. Check out some of the best venues on the app based on what "Roo-port" they're known for (and you have to believe us, because math):
1. Where You'll Find the Celebs (and Paparazzi): The Nice Guy
2. Where You'll Find Chill Vibes: The Bungalow
3. Where to go for Live Music: Villains Tavern
4. Where to go early to avoid the lines: Good Times at Davey Wayne's
