It all started when Ariel combed a fork through her thick, luscious, red locks; as little girls, we knew right then and there that was the kind of hair we would want one day. Long and flowy, that blows in the wind when we swim up on rocks to sing songs about tailless strangers. Of course our tastes have changed over the years, and nowadays I'm happier with a short blunt (or shaggy) lob than I ever was with waist-length strands. But the desire for those beachy waves never budged, especially living in LA, which is how Mermaid Hair was born.
Created for those seeking endless summer, the cult line is lovingly made in LA with high quality botanical extracts, essential oils, and without harsh sulfates. The simple, beautiful packaging in white, pink, and gold bottles looks modern, minimal, and yet feminine amongst my other bathroom essentials. A sweet combination of ocean air, florals, orange blossom flower, and coconut, the scent captures all that is whimsical and natural about LA and similar beach cities, somehow smelling exactly what you would imagine a "mermaid" scent to be. Despite its simplicity, the small and focused line of shampoo, conditioner, sprays, body oil, and candles still maintains an air of mystery, which only adds to its cult appeal.
For the last few weeks, I've been enjoying the Shampoo, Conditioner, Shine Spray, and Sea Spray. Since they're all made without sulfates, my hair feels soft and pampered, especially when I wash it. I'm typically very low-maintenance with my hair, often refusing to style it beyond air drying. But I usually layer on sprays and creams after washing to get my dull, flat-yet-somehow-frizzy strands to look remotely tamed-but-textured. Achieving that lived in, natural, effortless look actually takes some careful product maneuvering. But Mermaid Hair makes it easy, offering up sprays that give you that covetable It-Girl look: natural, flawless, but cool and tousled. The shine spray has been particularly effective at keeping my strands from looking out of control, while the Sea Spray has added some necessary and much-needed texture to my hair when it inevitably starts looking flat. A great addition to my minimal haircare routine, Mermaid Hair is finally providing me with the tools for locks that would make Ariel jealous.
