For a carnivore like myself, the idea of eating "vegan" is always a bit scary. But after positive experiences at places like The Gadarene Swine in Studio City, I realized that a really good vegan meal will make you totally forget about meat...at least for one night. But admittedly, "raw vegan" was virgin territory for me. The idea of raw vegan is that cooking things above 118 degrees kills off the important nutrients, so I came to 118 Degrees (the restaurant, located in Tarzana) expecting not a lot more than crudité platters. I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful, minimal interior and full menu. Though the cuisine might not be right for the everyday carnivore, for vegetarians, vegans, and raw vegans, 118 Degrees is an excellent choice that provides plenty of great, creative options(and even organic, vegan cocktails!).
Check out the beautiful exterior and interior below:
The cuisine is entirely plant-based and made without dairy, soy, wheat, and isn't cooked above 118 degrees to preserve enzymes, vitamins, and minerals. I was impressed how, considering all the restrictions, the Chefs were extremely creative with their preparations. A taco was made with a flax tortilla and "fried" avocados (also rolled in flax seeds to give it that crispy aspect) and filled out with veggies and salsa, and was one of our favorite bites of the night. Check out the slideshow below to see some of the other bites!
