To be honest, I don't make it out to Playa very often. So consider my surprise when I went to Sol Cocina and discovered that Playa Vista...is cool now? Growing up here, I always thought of it as that place near the airport. Of course, in recent years, Playa has become a part of LA's Silicon Beach, and has seen massive development. A great place to move for young professionals seeking brand new apartments, Playa is now finally getting the restaurants and shops to match. With some of the usual suspects filling up The Runway-- Whole Foods, Lyfe Kitchen, 800 Degrees, etc-- it's a nice community, although not necessarily the hub of all new and innovative LA dining. However, The Runway is starting to shake things up with some great, local spots that bring something new to the table. One of those is Sol Cocina, an upscale neighborhood spot boasting a huge space, a marble bar, beautiful patio and fire pit.
Bringing Baja cooking and plenty of cocktails to Playa, Sol Cocina focuses on local, seasonal ingredients and traditional cooking with modern elements. Their vast tequila menu is only rivaled by their selection of fun, fresh margaritas. We especially loved the Cucumber Japaleno Margarita, which was cool and refreshing with a little punch of spice. Check out some of their beautiful creations below.
With seafood ranging from oysters and raw dishes to a whole fried fish, the cuisine definitely has a Coastal feel. The snack foods and small tacos show the breadth of the restaurant's offerings, while the Platillos emphasize the modern elements of the traditional dishes. See below for some of the colorful preparations.
From what we've tasted so far, we've really enjoyed the fresh and flavorful cuisine. We think Sol Cocina would be the perfect place to come with a large group and celebrate with plenty of drinks while getting a chance to taste the myriad of bites. We're looking forward to coming back and bringing friends!
