As I continue my quest for the perfect summer glow, I realized something was missing. I’ve been watching my limbs start to return to warm-blooded, human hues, while my face has remained ghostly transparent. This is probably due to my obsessive use of sunscreen. Sensitives kin, a tendency to burn, and a desire to stave off dark spots and wrinkles (you’ve got to start young!) has lead me to apply SPF 20+ on my face every. Single. Day. And let’s not forget my preference to stay hidden under hats and sunglasses even when going on a brief walk around the neighborhood (also, I love feeling like a celebrity going incognito). So it should come as no surprise that I was committing the cardinal sin of self-tanning: letting my face remain a different color than my body.
To be honest, I’ve gotten pretty used to my very pale complexion. But when I look at photos of me from back in the day when I played softball and spent more time in the sun, I do feel a pang of loss for those days when I rocked a California-girl glow. Most people have to take a second look at my license photo out of pure disbelief because it features a 15-year-old version of me with long, brown hair (spoiler alert: I get highlights) and tan skin. As much as I miss it, the thought of sitting out in the sun and risking a super attractive burn is not ideal. And while I’m willing to slather tanning moisturizer all over my body, putting it on my face gives me pause. I’m so careful with my skincare routine, so finding a place for a self-tanner in my highly curated regimen was weirdly daunting.
However, after trying out both the Jergens® Natural Glow® Daily Moisturizer and the Jergens® Natural Glow® +FIRMING Daily Moisturizer (and enjoying the results), I realized it was time to conquer my face-tanner fear. I started tentatively, switching out my usual daily sunscreen for the Jergens® Natural Glow® FACE Daily Moisturizer with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 20. My skin has been so dry lately that I prefer to use this as a one moisturizer/sunscreen step instead of using a different moisturizer AND a different sunscreen.
Just like both moisturizers before it, the effects of the face moisturizer and sunscreen have been subtle. And I quickly got over that fear (and breathed a sigh of relief) when I noticed that there were no streaks or concentrated clumps of color. I even used the sunscreen when going on a sunny walk with my dog, and I was pleased that the tan remained intact without any accompanying burn. I’ll definitely continue to use this every few days as we get closer to summer, but for the best usage please following packaging instructions. I’m enjoying the gradual results and finally watching my face match the rest of my body.
