In case the name confused you, The Butcher's Daughter in Venice is not a place for gratuitous meat consumption. Actually, it's not a place for any meat consumption. Celebrated as a "slaughterhouse for vegetables," The Butcher's Daughter aims to create healthy vegetarian dishes that allow their fresh produce to shine. Their espresso bar, pressed juice menu, and raw smoothies are tailor-made for their health-conscious Venice patrons, while their food menu boasts healthy favorites from avocado toast to a spicy kale Caesar. For those in need of a more substantial meal, though, look no further than their brunch menu, which features the likes of buckwheat pancakes, a breakfast burrito with eggs, avocado, and potatoes, and "The Best Egg Sandwich" (eggs, english muffin, baby kale, avocado, cheddar, and harissa mayo). Envisioned by founder Heather Tierney, the design is a feminine take on a classic butcher shop, contrasting industrial elements like steel and concrete floors with softer, earthy elements, such as raw wood and greenery. The whole effect is a beautiful, airy space with plenty of natural light.
Per usual, I had to start out my meal with coffee, and was delighted to see that they offer flat whites on their impressive coffee menu. Beautifully presented, the drink was as tasty as it was visually pleasing, with just the right amount of sweetness.
As I was in the mood for burrata (I mean, when am I not?), I decided to go with the Mediterranean Bowl. One of their many bowl options, this one was packed with farro and veggies. The burrata, heirloom tomatoes, and pesto created a really nice combination that lent the dish that necessary satisfying element, something that I usually find lacking in veggie-centric dishes. It was a light, healthy dish that was surprisingly filling and tasty.
They also offer a few different versions of avocado toast. I was very sad that they were out of the one with burrata and tomato jam (I'll have to come back for that), but I liked that they offered a take on a classic avocado toast with a fried egg.
Overall, The Butcher's Daughter is the perfect Venice spot for a healthy brunch or lunch with girlfriends. I'm not usually a huge advocate of vegetarian cuisine, but I was impressed with how they're able to create healthy food that is also satisfying and tasty. We would definitely recommend checking it out for a casual weekend brunch or weekday power lunch!
