Though I’m still slowly emerging from my winter-induced Netflix coma, it seems like spring and summer soirées are already kicking off in full force. My next few weeks are packed with cocktail parties, happy hours, outdoor brunches, and more. I know…it’s a hard life. But with such a crazy schedule, figuring out the perfect, occasion-appropriate looks becomes a bit more challenging. With only a few minutes to jump in my car and get to the next location, how do I transition easily between events without carrying around my entire closet in my car? Obviously, planning ahead is key; I realized that giving myself an extra 5 minutes when I’m getting ready can make all the difference in the world. With 5 minutes, I can save myself 10 and master my makeup look. I can upgrade my shoes, spend more time on thoughtful layering, and figure out the logistics of transitioning from day to night. Below, I’m listing out my best tips to elevate your summer style for 3 of this season’s occasions, all only taking an extra 5 minutes.
1. From Work to the Rooftop Bar: With 5 more minutes…you can master layering for a smooth transition.
To be honest, I’m frequently so pressed for time that putting together an outfit rarely moves beyond the basic building blocks. While I tend to err on the side of simple and minimalist, my daily looks could easily be elevated if I spent 5 more minutes getting creative. I’m absolutely in love with the new Who What Wear collection for Target; I’ve always enjoyed Target’s designer partnerships (though Who What Wear isn’t a brand), and this collection is consistently churning out cool, on-trend pieces that are super affordable. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and on-the-nose fits. After looking for a slip-style dress for awhile now and being frequently let down by awkward, unflattering fits, I was thrilled to come across this breezy, loose version with a midi hemline. It would look great on its own with a pair of sandals for everyday wear, but I took 5 more minutes to pair it with classic sandals and carefully layer it over this striped top. Voila! Ready for work and meetings. And by taking an extra 5 minutes after work to remove the striped top, the look becomes suddenly appropriate for a fashionable night out at a rooftop bar.
2. The Backyard BBQ: With 5 more minutes…apply a summer-friendly 5-minute face.
When it comes to my everyday makeup, this lazy girl is always looking for the most efficient ways to get the most put-together (yet natural) makeup look. During the summer, I apply just my moisturizer and sunscreen before I’m on my way; makeup becomes that much more complicated when there’s a pool or beach involved. This summer, I’m looking to upgrade my #faceoftheday with a backyard BBQ–appropriate 5-minute face. With 5 more minutes, I can slap on this La Roche-Posay CC cream. Another idea for backyard BBQs? Trade in your typical denim shorts for a pair of culottes; they’re lightweight, easy, and will keep you warm when the sun goes down. With this ruffled pink top and tan sandals, the look can easily transition from your everyday activities to the backyard BBQ and more.
3. The Ladies Brunch: With 5 more minutes…elevate your look with lace-up sandals.
With warm weather comes one of my favorite spring/summer pastimes: the ladies brunch. Getting together with my girlfriends at a great brunch spot, sitting on the patio and drinking mimosas is one of my favorite things to do of all time. While my brunch looks tend to veer more toward casual than ladies-who-lunch, every once in awhile, I like to take a little extra time and dress up for the occasion. A comfortable, midi-length dress like this Who What Wear mock neck piece is great for giving me a little more room when I indulge in eggs benedict and French toast (but still looks sophisticated and lady-like). With 5 more minutes, I can swap out my typical pumps for these lace-up sandals. They’re a bit more high-maintenance, but lend the outfit a trendier edge.
