As much as I love my visits to coffee giants like Starbucks, or L.A. powerhouses Alfred and Verve, sometimes, hanging out in a quiet, indie coffee shop with a creative drink and a little snack is just as enjoyable. From hole in the wall refuges to modern, upscale spots, L.A. has no shortage of excellent indie coffee shops, with more popping up all the time. Though I'm sure there are dozens left for me to visit, here are 4 of my current favorites. Stop by for a cold brew, great pastries, and some peace and quiet.
1. Coffee Coffee, Fairfax
Situated in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it spot on Fairfax, Coffee Coffee is definitely a go-to for the summer months. The shop itself is basically the size of their coffee counter, but they have a beautiful outdoor space under a canopy and surrounded by plants to enjoy your Sightglass brews. Their funky art gives this indie space a personal touch, while the friendly baristas make this a real neighborhood joint. My favorite drink is "The Special"-- made with espresso, almond milk, and cold brew ice cubes (!!), the drink gets stronger as it all melts together.
2. Rubies + Diamonds
If you follow me on Instagram (and I'm totally sure that you do), you've probably noticed my frequent postings from Rubies & Diamonds. And no, I don't spend this much time hanging out at a jewelry store. Actually, R&D is one of my favorite indie coffee shops in the city, located in the new (and very cool) Columbia Square in Hollywood. Featuring addicting drinks (the sea salt cold brew is basically life changing) and fun bites (a kimchi spam croissant? what?), R&D boasts an impressive menu. With plush, comfortable seating, plenty of outlets, and free wifi (!), it's also a great place to grab your laptop and work.
3. The Assembly
Chances are, you've seen photos of this ultra-minimalist coffee shop in West Hollywood sprinkled into your Insta-feed before. With a great location, white-and-wood design, and some tasty drinks, it's a great little spot to stop in for a quick meeting or a quick fix.
4. Alchemist Coffee Project
A new discovery of mine, Alchemist Coffee Project is bringing trendy coffee to K-Town. With plenty of seating adorning their ultra cool interior, a food menu boasting favorites like avocado toast and sandwiches, and a smattering of cool coffee drinks (featuring the likes of Copa Vida and Intelligentsia), ACP has all the makings of a hotspot on the rise.
