Can you believe it’s already June? I feel like Spring just began, but here I am gearing up for summer trips, 4th of July, and preparing myself for the inevitable onslaught of unbearable heat that the next few months will bring. While my off-the-shoulder tops and breezy dresses are ready to go, I’m just starting to think about my swimwear situation, and this year, I’m getting really into the Americana swim trend. Stars and stripes, vintage cuts, red, white, and blue. Maybe it’s The 4th of July, or memories of simpler days spent at Summer camp, but for me, summer always recalls a sense of American nostalgia and iconography. With that in mind, I’m looking for bathing suits and apparel that capture those vintage vibes and infuse them with modernity.
From BBQ’s to pool parties to Malibu beach days, having an array of cute, figure-flattering swimwear that I can wear all summer long is definitely a must. Of course, for all of these events, styling outfits that are transitional and functional (but still fashion-forward) can be tricky, as is enjoying the Americana trend without looking too literal. So I accepted the challenge and put together 2 Americana-style outfits that work for multiple swimwear-focused summer events.
1. Poolside Party Time
One of the many wonderful things about L.A. is the abundance of pools; we may take them for granted 9 months out of our wonderfully warm year, but come summer, friends are throwing poolside soirées left and right. Dressing appropriately for such occasions always requires careful layering. Start with a cute swimsuit; this off-the-shoulder white bikini top is the perfect on-trend, flattering piece for all of those party photos that will obviously end up on Instagram. Layer on a pair of starry, high-waist shorts for a more literal application of that Americana vintage vibe. I always make sure to to keep myself warm when the sun goes down, and this cool striped button down does the trick (plus, it’s perfect for the oh-so-casual half-tuck). I threw in a red bag for a bit of color, and I finished the whole look off with a classic pair of black platform wedges, balancing the Americana vintage look with something that’s modern and clean. All together, the bathing suit is a great party piece, while the rest of the look is casual but sophisticated.
2. 4th of July BBQ
When celebrating The 4th of July, I prefer to acknowledge the theme of the holiday without going too literal (do I really need to wear an American flag on every item of clothing? I think not). Instead, I plan my look around the overall color scheme, adding in a bit of print (maybe some stars or stripes) to really drive that Americana feel. For a casual daytime BBQ, I like to start with a striped bikini— it’s a cute stand-alone piece that you can easily wear for the rest of the summer, but also works perfectly for our nation’s Independence Day. A laid-back striped knit top and red, high-waisted shorts are subtle, vintage-inspired pieces for working in the Americana trend, and look really bold and fun when paired together. Classic, comfortable, and on-trend, white sneakers are having a moment this summer. I topped off the look with red lipstick and a vintage-inspired boater hat. Overall, I love the subtle vintage influences to this look, and how a few simple pieces can really make an impact.
