One of the many perks of being a blogger is that I get a unique opportunity to try out a ton of beauty products. And as someone with plenty of skin issues, having access to high quality skincare has really helped me learn a lot about what works and doesn't work for my finnicky epidermis. One thing I've definitely learned over the years is that exfoliation, particularly in acid form, is my friend. If you're not familiar with acid exfoliation, I know...it sounds scary. It most likely brings to mind gruesome images of red, itchy, burning skin courtesy of some over-zealous aesthetician or dermatologist. But in reality, this generation of acid exfoliants are way more gentle, effective, and come in many variations, each suited to different skin types and concerns. Most importantly, exfoliating helps break down the build-up of dead skin cells (which leads to clogged pores, bumps, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, etc) to reveal younger, softer, brighter skin underneath. I recently partnered with Paula's Choice to learn all about exfoliants, as well as test out the efficacy of their products.
Acid exfoliants usually belong to one of two categories: AHA's (alpha hydroxy acid) and BHA's (beta hydroxy acid). Both types of acid diminish fine lines and wrinkles, lead to firmer skin, aid in hydration, improve uneven tone, and smooth out texture. However, they're different in a few ways. AHA's (think glycolic, lactic acid) work more on the skin's surface, and are better suited for normal or dry skin. They're also great for reducing signs of sun damage. On the other hand, BHA's (like salicylic) work both on the surface and inside the pore, and are usually preferred for normal or oily skin to help clear clogged pores, reduce blemishes, and calm skin. In addition to testing out the Resist Perfectly Balanced Cleanser, Resist Advanced Replenishing Toner, Resist Brightening Essence, Calm SPF 30, Resist Barrier Repair Moisturizer, I also took their Exfoliant Quiz to determine which products would work best for my skin, which lead me to the Resist Daily Pore Refining Treatment with 2% BHA.
First of all, all of the Paula's Choice products were simple and effective, which are perfectly suited for skincare novices or those who want targeted solutions without possible irritations, comedogenic ingredients, or fancy ingredients/packaging that do nothing other than drive up the price. The Resist Daily Pore-Refining Treatment with 2% BHA was definitely a great exfoliant option. It's a lightweight liquid formula that you apply after cleansing and toning, and I loved that it was gentle enough to use everyday under moisturizer and SPF. In addition to the salicylic acid, which helps unclog pores and target signs of agent, it's full of hydrating and skin-soothing ingredients, which really helped with my dryness and irritation. I also tried the Resist Advanced Pore-Refining Treatment with 4% BHA, a more powerful BHA serum filled with antioxidants to protect the skin and fight signs of aging. I would definitely recommend the Advanced 4% Treatment to anyone who is already experienced with acid exfoliants, as it packed a bit more of a punch.
Trying out all the Paula's Choice products not only demonstrated the importance of adding an exfoliant to my skincare routine, but it really helped me learn about the different options, what would work best for my skin, and how I can actually use one everyday! If you're considering acid exfoliants, I would definitely recommend taking the quiz to find out what will be best for you, and check out this promo code for Free Shipping on All Orders + Free RESIST Eye Cream Travel on a $50 order: BEBRIGHT.
