Throughout my extensive, multi-year skincare journey, I feel that I've learned SO much about products and ingredients. One of the biggest (and most recent) realizations was that most of our daily beauty products include a slew of ingredients that are just straight up bad for us. We often think about what we put in our bodies and how that affects our overall health. But we rarely put the same kind of careful thought into what we put on our bodies. According to Follain (one of my favorite sites for all things clean beauty), 60% of everything we put on our skin ends up in our bloodstream. Yikes.
Many of the most common skincare ingredients have been studied and shown to be toxic in some way; for example, aluminum, which is found in most deodorants, has been scientifically linked to cancer. Other common ingredients might be as mild as potential irritants to drying to actual carcinogens. And while most developed countries like Canada and those in Europe ban hundreds of ingredients from beauty products (1500 in Europe and 500 in Canada), the U.S. has banned a paltry 30.
Luckily, there are tons of beauty brands who have taken it upon themselves to offer high quality products without any of the toxicity. One of those is Osea Malibu, an LA-based (woohoo!) skincare brand that was way ahead of the game, producing non-toxic products for the last 20 years. Their products are also vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free and non-GMO. You can learn more about this commitment and what is NOT in their products here. The base for the majority of their products is a proprietary seaweed trio, which is USDA certified organi and sourced from the pristine waters of Patagonia.
I personally have been enjoying the Ocean Cleanser, White Algae Mask, Hyaluronic Sea Serum, and Atmosphere Protection Cream over the last few months. The cleanser is by far my favorite, offering a gentle and creamy formula that effectively cleanses without leaving my skin feeling tight. It's made with vegan lactic acid (derived from beets!), which leaves my skin looking more radiant. It also smells lovely. The White Algae Mask is another favorite, calming, moisturizing, and brightening my skin. For the drier months, I've definitely been depending on the Hyaluronic Sea Serum, which maintains moisture in a light, gel-like formulation. Finally, the Atmosphere Protection Cream is a great, light, daily moisturizer that helps provide protection against environmental factors like pollution.
