Sometimes it can be exhausting living in the land of the health conscious. Did I really need to spend $20 on a coconut milk iced latte and a green juice? Probably not. Do I regret my decision? No, never when coffee is involved. But there are definite benefits to this lifestyle, the first being that healthy or intolerance-conscious food is relatively easy to come by. The second is that said healthy food can be pretty tasty, well-thought out, and served from a nice spot in a cool neighborhood. And Great White, Venice's new healthy cafe, ticks all these "healthy food" boxes. Opened in September on Pacific across the street from the iconic hanging "Venice" sign, Great White is a perfect fit for the local surf crowd, offering all-day favorites from avocado toast to fish tacos and smoothie bowls. The small space is minimal and bright, with an open patio space that's lovely on sunny days.
We wanted a mix of lighter and more substantial fare, so we started off with the very grammable Blue Smoothie Bowl. As someone who has usually preferred to drink her smoothies, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. It's definitely a very light bowl that works as a small breakfast, snack, or addendum to a meal, with the smoothie (colored by blue algae) tasting fruity and sweet. Layers of housemade granola and seasonal fruits add some nice texture, making this a nice improvement on a basic smoothie or yogurt parfait.
The Harvest Bowl was another dish that I was pleasantly surprised by; the quinoa base boasted heartier toppings like avocado, squash, and charred brussels sprouts. Pickled onions added a bright pop to a dish that was actually quite flavorful, while shaved almonds added a nice little crunch.
Of course, we couldn't be so close to the ocean and NOT have fish tacos. These came with grilled fish, citrus slaw, chipotle aioli, and a mango herb sauce on corn tortillas. They were definitely very light, and the fish was grilled nicely. I enjoyed the addition of the slaw, aioli, and mango herb sauce, while the tortillas were substantial without verging on too thick or chewy.
Our meal at Great White was definitely a nice one-- I appreciated the casual ambiance, as it's easy to just pop-in for lunch on any given day. While the meal was light, we definitely all left feeling satiated, as all of the dishes offered something substantive. Of course, the beautiful setting didn't hurt either.
