Undoubtedly, New Year's Resolutions about eating healthier are often the hardest to keep. And sure, a lot of this boils down to waning motivation and a general lack of self-restraint (*ahem* hi.). But another (and more forgiving) theory is that we set these goals at the beginning of January, just as winter begins, and as temps continue to drop, who wants to eat cold salads and go for runs outside? Winter is a time for hibernation, Netflix, take-out, and hot bowls of pasta, so living a healthy, active lifestyle seems simply counterintuitive (honestly, I vote for resolutions being a summer thing). And as your resolutions fall away and you embrace the doldrums of winter, why not enjoy a nice hot bowl of pasta (or three) at Santa Monica's new hotspot, Uovo? From the same minds behind Sugarfish, Uovo is a small, no-reservations, quick and casual pasta joint serving fresh, handmade noods for relatively reasonable prices. Their dishes are simple but well-prepared, with classics ranging from Cacio e Pepe to Lasagna. It's the perfect spot for a casual post-work meal or a post-Farmer's Market lunch on the weekends. We recommend getting in early, though, to miss the line.
We started off with their signature Bolognese, which lactose-intolerant folks will be pleased to hear is made without any dairy. The tagliatelle is silky but has a bit of chew to it, while the ragu is meaty, flavorful, and endlessly comforting. It's an easy go-to dish for picky eaters and pasta obsessives alike.
Another signature dish is their Tortellini Crema di Parmigiano, which are little meat pasta pillows in a creamy, cheesy sauce. It's a surprisingly light dish, and really good. Definitely can't go wrong with this one.
For something with a bit more kick, the Tonnarelli all’Amatriciana is a great choice. The pasta definitely has a bit of chew to it, while the sauce provides a subtle and building spice. Little bits of guanciale (cured pork) are a nice little meaty surprise and add a crunchy element.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a pasta dish at Uovo that isn't at least good, and almost everything we've tried has been really tasty, fresh, and comforting. It's a great spot to visit with a few friends or a date, and the perfect way to cure your winter blues (while also shirking those health resolutions).
