To be totally honest, I've been feeling a bit uninspired by fashion of late. Maybe it's the faster moving consumption cycle, or the proliferation of certain trends that flood social media. Mostly, I think it comes down to the difficulty of finding clothing and concepts that really excite me. Shopping has brought out the Project Runway judge in me, critiquing everything I see, imagining how I'd redesign it or re-fit it for my body type. Which is why I was so excited when I came across Frilly; as soon as I started to see the name pop up on the Instagram accounts of influential fashion figures like Chriselle Lim, I knew I needed to know more. The LA-based company (woo!) is a hybrid contemporary fashion brand and tech start-up, offering beautiful, made-to-order clothing that diverts from fashion's current focus on throwaway pieces, mass production, and speedy production cycles. Instead of taking what they see on the runway or the street and just producing a similar, cookie-cutter version of it, they provide a platform filled with classic yet modern pieces that are fully customizable!
The customer gets to play designer, choosing everything from the fabric and color to the hem length and more. Every piece is unique and bespoke, with thoughtful design options as well as suggestions for those who can't decide between their favorites. And though the prices are more similar to a contemporary brand, they reflect the time and quality put into every garment, giving you pieces that will last you for years and you know that you'll love, because you designed it. The process harkens back to a time when couturiers worked out of small ateliers, fitting individualized pieces for their high society clients. But Frilly has democratized this tradition, bringing it into the modern era and for the modern woman. You just pick a piece and the website will guide you through the many customization options! With all of the styles and customizations on the site, the options are endless, allowing you to keep coming back, playing around, and buying both new and your favorite pieces in all different ways. Additionally, the company's focus on providing a platform that is anti-mass production and fast fashion allows them to actually have a fairly sustainable business model, cutting out waste by creating one garment at a time. And the fact that they recognize the importance of a better quality of life for their garment workers abroad is truly the cherry on top of this very sweet fashion cake.
I got a chance to visit one of their LA offices and order a few pieces, and the process could not have been more seamless. I was honestly a bit intimidated starting out, wondering if I had the creativity to design my own clothes. But as I picked a few pieces and got started, the design process became fun. It inspired and reinvigorated my love of clothes, and all of a sudden, I knew exactly what fabrics, colors, and hem lengths I wanted. I ended up choosing 3 pieces; the first was the sleeveless Herron Nora Robe Dress II, which I chose in a blush pink satin back crepe and edited to have a midi length split hem, thick belt, and skinny notch lapel. An easy, lightweight staple for Spring. I also chose the Cielo Pajama Top (something I've been coveting for months!), settling on the beautiful satin material in a deep burgundy hue. I loved the cropped version and addition of the side splits, chest pocket, neck tie, and ruffled cuffs, which truly give the top a personal feel and distinguished it from every other pajama top I've ever seen.
The pieces arrived within two weeks, packaged in a really nice garment bag inside a beautiful big white box. And honestly, I could not have been happier with how they turned out. They came in the exact specifications (not a single mistake) that I ordered, fit perfectly, and are so high quality. The fabrics are even nicer in person, and I could immediately recognize the high level of care and craftsmanship that was put into every piece. Another bonus; they look great on my body, which makes total sense! Obviously, I know my body better than anyone, so being able to choose the right sleeve, hem length, and other features allowed for a finished product that was optimized to my shape and size. For anyone who loves fashion, design, and quality, I cannot recommend Frilly enough. Keep scrolling to check out how my new pieces looked!
